Want to be a Beach Lifeguard?

Lifeguard using a rescue board to rescue casualtyEver fancied working on a beach as a lifeguard? ..then the RLSS UK National Beach Lifeguard Qualification is what you need!

The qualification is nationally recognised and covers all the skills involved with rescue, resuscitation, first aid and beach supervision.

NSVL runs regular beach lifeguard courses from our headquarters in Whitley Bay on the North East coast.

What is a Beach Lifeguard?

Lifeguard trainees demonstrate a 3 person lift"A lifeguard works as part of a team to provide a safe environment for beach users by preventing accidents and providing rescue and emergency care in response to an incident."

Be under no illusions - being a beach lifeguard is not just sun, sea and sand. It is a highly skilled job where you are responsible for the safety of members of the public. This doesn't mean that it isn't also a lot of fun, but lifeguards are expected to have a professional attitude to what is an extremely high profile job.

Whether you are interested in becoming qualified so you can work on a beach, or just because you would like the challenge, it is not something you should enter in without fully understanding what you will be expected to do.

How fit do I need to be?

The Beach Lifeguard manualYou must be a competent swimmer and relatively fit, but you don't need to be a world-class athlete!

As a minimum before the course you should be able to swim 400m on your front without stopping, surface dive to a depth of 2m without damage to your hearing and run 400m in under 2 minutes without being fatigued. Some experience of open water is desirable, but not essential. Click here for some suggested pre-course training.

More specific fitness criteria may be laid down for some courses - see our Course Checklist for more information.

If you have any more questions please check our Frequently Asked Questions page, before e-mailing us.

What will I do on the course?

Training takes place at our beach headquarters in Whitley Bay where we have the latest audio-visual projectors, rescue equipment and changing rooms with showers. Pool sessions take place along the road at Whitley Bay Leisure Pool.

Why not have a look at the full assessment syllabus, which lists all the tests you will need to complete at the end of the course.
