CPR Update drop in session

Date : Sunday 1 October
Venue : NSVL Beach Base Time : 12 noon - 4.30pm
Item last updated : 22/09/06 Date posted : 22/09/06 Info current until : 01/10/06

The 2005 Resuscitation Council guidelines are being implemented into all RLSS Programmes from this month, and will be compulsory for all assessments from January 2007.

Trainer Assessors should have received update packs for the various disciplines, but this is a change which affects all members who hold resuscitation awards and qualifications.

NSVL courses and training will be using the new protocols from now on, but for those who want to get up to date as soon as possible, there will be a drop in session from 12 noon on Sunday 1 October down at the beach base.

All interested members are welcome to pop in at any time before 4.30pm to have a go at the new protocols. The update should take little more than half an hour, as all protocols have been simplified.

Assessors will also be on hand should any members wish to sit the new Life Support or Life Support 3 award.

It would be great to see as many members as possible so that everyone involved with the club is working from the most current CPR guidelines.

Pizza night is back!

Date : Sunday 1 October
Venue : Cassa Belissimo Time : After the pool session
Item last updated : 12/09/06 Date posted : 12/09/06 Info current until : 01/10/06

After a break for other social events over the summer, the pizza night is back!

All members and families are welcome to come along to Cassa Belissimo on Sunday 1 October after the pool session for a happy hour meal.

Last time we had over 70 people in our group, packing out the restaurant. It would be nice to see a similar number this time and hopefully some of the new Rookies as well so that we can get to know parents and Rookies away from the poolside.

Maureen at the stall will be taking numbers on the week preceeding the meal, please see her if you would like more information.

It's that time of year again - oh no it isn't, oh yes it is etc

Date : Saturday 16 December
Venue : Journal Tyne Theatre Time : 1pm onwards
Item last updated : 12/09/06 Date posted : 12/09/06 Info current until : 16/12/06

Last year's Panto groupSummer may be over and winter almost upon us, but don't be depressed! It's time to start thinking about the annual NSVL trip to the panto at the Journal Tyne Theatre.

This year's pantomime will be Dick Whittington, starring Brendan Healy and Maxie and Mitch and it promises to be an afternoon packed with entertainment...12 Days of Christmas anyone?

We will be attending the matinee performance at 1pm on Saturday 16 December. Tickets for the pantomime cost £14 for adults and £10 for children. All members, parents and family are welcome to attend.

We have reserved a number of tickets, but with the greater number of Rookies this year there may be more demand than tickets available, so book early to avoid disappointment.

After the pantomime we will head along to Stowell Street for a Chinese Buffet meal (cost £6 per person). Adult members will then be hitting the town after the meal to continue partying.

If you wish to purchase tickets please see Maureen at the stall or by e-mail to maureen.welsh@blueyonder.co.uk.

New manikins

Item last updated : 12/09/06 Date posted : 12/09/06 Info current until : n/a

Heartstart NSVLNSVL has been presented with over £1,500 worth of new resuscitation manikins and equipment through our affiliation with the British Heart Foundation's Heartstart scheme.

The club has been supplied with 10 new adult resuscitation manikns, 1 baby manikin and a TV/DVD player to assist with delivering the Heartstart Emergency First Aid course to groups across North Tyneside.

The manikins are already being put to good use and are being used for the Heartstart session for Rookie parents.

New term at the pool

Item last updated : 12/09/06 Date posted : 12/09/06 Info current until : n/a

Formal pool sessions resumed on Sunday 10 September and we'd like to welcome to our new Rookies who have started over the summer and welcome back all our returning Rookies. Pool sessions have been a bit quieter over the summer, but the first session of the new term saw us back to our full complement of over 60 Rookies.

There have been various movements between classes due to both age and ability, and badges have been awarded to returning Rookies who were assessed before the summer.

The Rookies and higher lifesaving programme is arranged mainly into age groups, so in some cases children will have stayed in the same class where many of their classmates have moved up. We want Rookies to be something that your children can attend for as long as they wish, hopefully progressing through the programme right through to adulthood, so we do have to make some difficult decisions on what is best for each child. If your child started Rookies at age 6 then you should expect your child to remain in each of the four 'Star Grade' classes for around 18 months to take them through until they are age 12. If you or your child wish to discuss where they have been placed, please speak to the teacher before or after the session.

Kiss4Life thanks

Item last updated : 12/09/06 Date posted : 12/09/06 Info current until : n/a

Just a quick message of thanks from the Royal Life Saving Society to our members, who raised a grand total of £542.72 for this year's RLSS Kiss4Life campaign through various activities such as a quiz night and Valentine's party.

Our donation to the appeal was the largest donation from any club in the country, so thanks go to everyone involved. You can see the letter of thanks on the notice board at the pool.

End of season BBQ

Date : Saturday 2nd September
Venue : NSVL HQ
Item last updated : 02/09/06 Date posted : 09/08/06 Info current until : 02/09/06

Unfortunately, torrential rain meant the beach games were a complete wash out (not least because the drains on the promenade burst scouring massive gulleys in the beach below), however, it came out fine by the evening and the barbecue went ahead for those who were there...just a shame there weren't more people down!

Heartstart for parents

Date : Sundays 10th and 17th September
Venue : Leisure Pool Time : 5-6pm during Rookie sessions
Item last updated : 16/08/06 Date posted : 16/08/06 Info current until : 10/09/06

During the Rookie pool sessions on 10th and 17th September (date corrected from e-mail news bulletin) we will be running Heartstart sessions for all Rookie parents, friends and relatives.

This is the chance for you to learn (or brush up on) essential lifesaving skills, such as CPR and dealing with choking.

These sessions will be provided free of charge to parents and run during the normal 5-6pm Rookie session. The course is 2 hours long, so will run over 2 weeks.

We would like as many parents as possible to attend these sessions, as it won't only benefit you but also means that you will be able to help your child learn these vital skills.

The sessions are also open to other members, and any family or friends, along with lifeguards who can use it as logged training.

If you are unable to attend these sessions, then it is hoped the sessions will become a regular occurrence.

The cost for the weekend is £20 for the caravan plus food, drink and travel (car sharing will be arranged when numbers are known). ‘Delegates' to the convention can travel on Friday morning or after work on Friday, and return on Sunday evening or Monday morning as work commitments dictate.

There will be two theme nights, one a lifeguard theme night and one to be confirmed.

Convention is open to all adult members and 16/17 year-old lifeguards who have permission from their parents.

Please contact Joe or Maureen if you are interested.

Beach Lifeguard Competition Results

Item last updated : 10/08/06 Date posted : 10/08/06 Info current until : n/a

NSVL beach lifeguards joined teams from across the north-east on Wednesday 9 August at Tynemouth Longsands for the annual North East Regional Beach Lifeguard Competiton.

Although the team of Dave Bedford, Simon Almond, Simon White Johnny Erskine and Samantha Robertson put in a valiant effort, they unfortunately finished last. However, there was some success for NSVL as the winning Hartlepool A Team had one NSVL member, Becki Powell, in their team and were trained by NSVL member Debbie Woods. Congratulations to all involved.

Unfortunately the event was overshadowed by the search and recovery of a missing diver shortly before the start of the competition, in which a number of the North Tyneside lifeguards were directly involved. Due to the circumstances, the hastily rearranged North Tyneside Lifeguard team (including 3 NSVL members Becky Newman, Seamus Brayne and Alex Sargeant) gave an excellent showing in 4th place.

Nippy new Nipper boards

Item last updated : 01/08/06 Date posted : 01/08/06 Info current until : n/a

Rookies show off the new Nipper Boards NSVL's Rookies now have access to a range of new equipment for use at the beach and in the pool, thanks to grants from the Willan Trust and RW Mann Trust.

The grants, totalling £4,000, have allowed the club to buy specialist 'Nipper boards' which are junior versions of the lifeguard rescue boards. The Nipper boards are made of a soft material so that they can be used safely by Rookies to practise board rescue techniques.

Additionally, two soft wave skis have also been purchased for use by the Rookies to practise paddling skils, along with eight junior rescue tubes to practise torpedo buoy rescues.

Any budding Body Boarders ?

01/08/06 - Thanks to the Rubber Soul surf shop in Tynemouth, Rookies and adult members of NSVL now have 10 new professional body boards for use in training.

The body boards will be used by the Rookies at the beach through the summer and in the pool through the winter.

In total, this means the Rookies now have the benefit of 10 Nipper boards, 10 body boards, 2 wave skis and 8 junior rescue tubes.

buy.at/NSVL

buy.at/nsvl 21/06/06 - NSVL has launched a new online fundraising webshop.

Over 100 retailers are accessible through the webshop, including Amazon, BT, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and RAC. Many retailers provide exclusive offers to the webshop, such as discounts or offering free delivery to the customer, providing more reasons for supporters to buy products through the webshop.

Donating to NSVL now couldn't be easier or cheaper!

Gift aid it...

09/07/06 - Now NSVL is a registered charity there are a number of benefits, including the ability to claim gift aid on all donations to the club.

If you are a UK tax payer and would like us to reclaim tax automatically on any donations you make to the club (at no cost to yourself), please complete and return the Gift Aid form when you receive it.

A gift aid form only needs to be filled in once but means that the club can claim an extra 28p in every £1 you donate to the club, so it is a really easy way for you to raise money for the club with very little effort.

Photoshoot photos...

Rookies demonstrating the huddle position29/05/06 - Thanks to everyone who attended on Bank Holiday Monday for the NSVL photoshoot - with over 30 members of all ages present it was a great turnout.

Over 140 images of all the different groups and activities were taken. The rushes of the images look superb, and the best ones will be used by NSVL for publicity purposes after a little cropping and enhancing. All of the 'raw' images, along with enhanced images, will be available for members and parents to buy shortly.

Special thanks go to Sally Hoban who gave up her time to come and take the photos.

We're a charity - it's official!

26/05/06 - After weeks of waiting, we have now received confirmation from the Charities Commission that NSVL is officially a Registered Charity.

The announcement is a great start to the summer season and and is the culmination of months of hard work behind the scenes.

The new status as a charity will give the club much greater access to funding to improve and develop all areas of our activities for the benefit not only of members, but also the wider community. It will also help us to develop the club's local, national (and even international) profile.

We will shortly be organising a social event to celebrate the news and it seems like a good excuse for a proper beach barbecue! Watch this space.

For those who are interested in the technical side of things, NSVL's entry in the Register of Charities can be found here.

Club Newsletter - have we got your e-mail??

05/05/06 - All members should have received (or will receive on Sunday) the NSVL Spring Newsletter.

From this issue, the newsletter is primarily e-mail based in order to cut down on costs. All members who have given us an e-mail address (and permission to use it) should have received it via e-mail.

For those who do not have e-mail, a text only printed copy has been posted out to you or will be available to pick up on Sunday at the pool for those who will be there.

If you gave us an e-mail address on your membership form but have not received the newsletter in your inbox, then you may be one of a number of people whose e-mail addresses bounced back.

Could all members and parents who use e-mail please ensure we have current and correct e-mail addresses, as this is the easiest way to contact you. If you have not received the newsletter via e-mail, then please e-mail james@lifesaversn-d.org.uk stating your name so that your correct address can be entered onto our database.

You can view this and previous newsletters at www.nsvl.org.uk/newsletter.

CPR Updates

05/05/06 - The new CPR guidelines will officially be launched (for RLSS purposes) at the RLSS Annual Conference on 20 May.

NSVL will make sure all its members are trained in the new protocols as soon as possible. All teachers and trainers will receive free copies of the Resuscitation Council UK's Resuscitation for the Citizen booklet, which outlines the basics of the new protocols. Any adult members who would like a copy can also request one free of charge.

For more information, you can visit the Resuscitation Council UK's web site at www.resus.org.uk. New checklists and handouts will be available on the NSVL web site once updates have taken place.

It should be noted that use of the 'old' protocols is NOT dangerous and will still provide effective basic life support - if you haven't received training in the 'new' protocols, continue to use/teach the old protocols.

Teachers and Trainers - please read

05/05/06 - Thanks to all our members who have been running courses, teaching lessons or doing assessments over the past few months - the club couldn't run without you.

As the holiday season approaches, could all teachers and trainers please ensure that they write in the pool diary any dates they will be unavailable to teach so that we can ensure classes are covered. We will also be running beach sessions for the Rookies on Sunday afternoons, so anyone who is available to assist would be welcome.

Also, would beach lifeguard trainers please let Dave Bedford know what days/times they are available during the summer season to run staff training for North Tyneside Council Lifeguards. Main training sessions will take place on weekend mornings, but where trainers are available at other times this is also possible.

Beach Lifeguards - please read

05/05/06 - As you may know, NSVL runs the staff training for the North Tyneside Council lifeguards over the summer season as part of our agreement with the Council.

In order to provide this training we need qualified lifeguards who are not already on duty to provide additional lifeguard cover while training take place.

This is an excellent opportunity for newly qualified lifeguards to get some experience working on the beach or for our experienced lifeguards to put some volunteer time in on a different beach.

Most training will take place on weekend mornings and will last approximately 2 hours, after which you are free to leave, do training yourself or stay on and help out. We are also running Rookies beach sessions on Sunday afternoons, so extra lifeguards to assist with that would be welcome.

Please let Lifeguard Captain Dave Bedford (or Vice Captain Liam Arrowsmith) know what days you are available.

New Vice Lifeguard Captain

05/05/06 - After qualifying as a beach lifeguard at the beginning of April, Liam Arrowsmith has been a regular feature down at the beach base training, providing cover for courses and even keeping an eye on the beach over the Easter weekend as well as providing pool lifeguard cover during the Rookies sessions.

Having shown such willing, he has been invited to become Vice Lifeguard Captain for the club and help out Dave Bedford organising training at the beach and pool, so well done to him.
